April 2023 Poetry Month — Week 2
This past week brought many late nights playing single parent with my partner gone on a business trip, followed by a wonderful weekend spent volunteering at one of my favorite nature preserves. Thus, I’m just catching up to post poems for week two of national poetry month inspired by prompts from my friends Chris & Amanda.
8. Venus
Hips round,
Belly full,
From the children it helped grow.
Breasts that reach for the ground.
A body so real it could be someone I know.
An image of the Goddess is found.
9. Unicorn
Of rare beasts,
I am aware of many.
One horned, hoofed and maned I do not know.
These rarities,
they swim the ebullient seas,
climb the cresting hills,
and exist within our sacred grooves.
Do they deserve our admiration,
Can they be our inspiration?
If they are lost, we will never know.
10. Siblings
A whole world in our backyard and our messy rooms,
Steady ground while everything else moved.
We had each other when something felt wrong,
Threats to you made me grow strong.
An echoing voice through the heat vent,
Giggling over shared acquaintances so insolent.
Threats of death by butter knife over every small offense,
Sharpening our talons at the others’ expense.
Worrying, and wondering, seeing a different way.
Imposing sensibilities, attention to which you would never pay.
To you my dear kin, I wave the white flag,
For my personality you weren’t meant to have.
If I were to make even one tiny choice for you.
It would take away life that is your’s true.
Instead I will choose with great joy and great pleasure,
Of being a witness to your life’s immense treasure.
But if ever you have a need of a hand,
Please reach for mine and it will be had.
11. Information
Too much to be had,
Of so little consequence,
Time to look at something else.
12. Pink
I’ve never identified much with pink.
Neither with blue I do not think.
I’d rather be painted purple
13. Mind Exploration
Black as the night,
With Ears closed,
Eyes shut tight,
Mind open wide.
Diving deep into a sea of blue,
The breath runs right through.
Seeking tributaries, thoughts arise.
Letting the flow be the prize.
14. Entertainment
Buzzing bees,
Fuzzy butts,
Protruding from petals,
Nectar drunk.
Please enjoy & do feel free to share your own. See you next week — hopefully a bit closer to “on time” :)
